							Water Hygiene

		Numerous types of bacteria can be present in water, including the highly contagious legionella. Neglected water tanks and in particular cooling towers are extremely high risk areas for the spread of disease, as bacteria proliferates in contaminated or stagnant conditions.

		MSM has trained Engineers for building service plants to ensure that the water systems of their clients will comply with the latest Health and Safety Guidelines and will avoid any violation of current regulations.


	Water chlorination treatments

	Cooling towers, domestic hot and cold water storage and distribution systems, all need regular chlorination treatments in accordance with the minimum requirements specified by the Health and Safety Executive’s guidance notes.

	MSM recommends that routine water chlorination treatment is incorporated into a preventative maintainance programme, to ensure the work is carried out at the intervals specified. MSM technicians also undertake one off water chlorination treatments, for example where cooling towers that have been out of commission have been returned to service.

	Water tank cleaning

		Another routine, but nevertheless vital aspect of ensuring water supplies are maintained to required standards is the cleaning of hot and cold water tanks and cooling towers, to remove all traces of rust, slime, sludge, scale, sediment and algae. Where necessary, and if appropriate, new tanks, lids, pipework, rodent filters and insulation can be installed. Also the preparation and painting of metal tanks using approved coatings can be undertaken.

		Cooling towers, particularly, call for close inspection of all surfaces for signs of deterioration or corrosion. Where required, MSM will replace timber drift eliminators with metal or GRP units and paint, or preferably reline with GRP the cooling tower ponds.


	Water plant maintainance

	In addition to water hygiene measures MSM also offer complete tank refurbishment in accordance with Health and Safety guidelines.

	Upgrading systems can take many different approaches from total tank replacements to more effective internal refurbishment. MSM are specialists in butyl lining of tanks to meet all statutory requirements, and provides a 10 year guarantee giving a new lease of life to existing tanks.
